Digitization & Industry 4.0 in Practice – Checklist
To support operational stakeholders in determining and implementing suitable digitization measures, German Institut für angewandte Arbeitswissenschaft (Institute for Applied Ergonomics – ifaa) has developed a specific checklist.
The ifaa checklist sensitizes to reflect existing business models and processes and to identify plant-specific advantageous technological approaches. In particular, it focuses on the implementation of digitization measures to optimize business processes. Users are informed about possible needs for action as well as opportunities and risks that resulted from the technical introduction.

The ifaa checklist –
▪ Enables to reflect existing business models and processes and
identify company-specific approaches for Industry 4.0.
▪ Focuses company actors on optimizing business processes.
▪ Indicates the need for action and identifies appropriate fields of action.
▪ Promotes the emergence of ideas and the definition of necessary tasks.
For this purpose, eleven different fields of action are considered in more detail:
- Work design
- Work organization
- Occupational health and safety
- Skills and qualification
- Working and working hours
- Data protection
- Data security
- External support
- Profitability and success
Determination and Operationalization of Digitalization Activities
Basically, the checklist is divided into two parts: Part #1 helps to compile a general review of the current situation and helps to identify possible appropriate digitization measures. Its implementation is covered in Part #2.
The checklist is primarily aimed at companies which are currently planning technical changes, which are about to start implementing them, or which are considering measures that are already being implemented and want to improve their impact.
